THE GIFT OF MOTHERHOOD

Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers! I pray that this would be the best Mother’s Day you have ever had. Many today are having memories of mothers who have passed on. Keep the sweet, and dismiss the bitter. Those of you who have living mothers, give your mother a call, say a kind word and let them know that you love them.

Motherhood is probably best expressed by God in His relentless pursuit of mankind. One can always determine the depth of desire by the level and manner of pursuit. God has demonstrated this love and pursuit for us by sending His Son for us and never giving up on us. Our Father God has shown us His nature which loves more deeply than that of a mother.

Let us examine a couple of His characteristics. We find the Lord giving as only a mother could in that He loved the world so much that He gave His Son. Then we find that He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. This is a picture of a mother standing by her child when everyone else has given up hope. The Father has given birth to us as mothers give birth to their children. The similarities are very great. I feel that all good mothers are a child’s best friend.

The next characteristic that I find in God is seen in the gospels when He looks over Jerusalem and weeps saying, “how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wing” (Matthew 23:37). In this statement we find that God’s protection is unquestionable and selfless. He did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all. That is a mother’s love!

I would like to encourage all of you mothers to be vigilant to believe in the calling of God upon you, and know that without you, the rest of us do not exist. Sojourner Truth, when fighting for the right of women to vote, said that “God’s choosing to send the Savior involved a covenant between Himself and the woman.” I believe this is a special statement and should be a part of every woman’s heart, knowing that the Savior came as a direct result of God and woman.

Be blessed; you are very special!
