CHRIST OUR TREASURE

In the following verse, the apostle Paul unveils Jesus Christ as the all-sufficient, sustaining God! “Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).It is in Christ alone that all things consist, hold together!

One of Paul‘s goals for the church at Colosse and Laodicea was that they would apprehend, lay hold of, the riches, the wealth, of the full assurance of understanding and come to the knowledge of the hidden secrets of God the Father and of Jesus Christ. The apostle then unveils Christ, saying “in whom are hidden [buried] all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3)! What an amazing statement! The deep wells of wisdom and knowledge and true riches are found in one place, one source, Jesus Christ! Through this unveiling, we search out the unsearchable riches of Christ! It is not as though God placed His wealth in the person of Christ, rather, Christ Himself is the wealth of God! The words “true riches” imply that there are false riches just as Christ calls Himself the true vine indicating there are false vines. Christ is the treasure! You need look no further!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The Father so loved the world that He gave us, who believe, His beloved Son in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Think of it, God has entrusted to us who believe, the mystery of the universe. No wonder the apostle writes, “to them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).The Father has committed to us the riches of His Son, thus, the riches of the universe, of creation itself! Therefore, that we may fully comprehend His plan, God uses trials, difficulties, and differences within relationships to hone, sharpen, enlarge, and finish us, to prepare us as His repository, for His incomparable treasure, Christ Jesus! The person of Jesus Christ is God’s true riches! Knowing these things, let us, therefore, “give thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light,” knowing that from this store of wealth, Jesus Christ, God’s treasure, comes all things of eternal worth (Colossians 1:12)!
