In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light (Genesis 1:1-2).
Today we are beginning a new year. This is an opportunity to start this new year the right way: obeying God and exercising faith in His word as never before, not regarding the darkness. In the above scripture, we infer a gap of time between verse one and verse two because everything God made was good. In verse two, we see the earth without form and void; darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering (brooding) over the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Perhaps there has been a gap between your first encounter with God and your present situation. Whatever happened between your glorious past and your present reality can only be remedied by the presence of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. Therefore, we can safely conclude that problems can only be effectively solved by the presence of God and His intentionality on your behalf! It does not matter how deep the darkness because when God speaks, your darkness flees and your light comes and brings with it a brand new day, a new dawning! Verse three says, Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. The Word of God, the Light, dispels the darkness!
In the Gospel of John, we see God working on behalf of His new creation in a similar fashion as He did in Genesis. John writes, “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:1-5). In John’s Gospel, we see the Word is present in the beginning and the light of God shines in the darkness and the darkness is unable to overcome the light!
Let this be a lesson to you that God, Himself, presides over you and your conditions and that no weapon formed against you is going to prosper this year!
