HE WATCHES OVER YOU

Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41).

Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.” Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?” (Matthew 26:38, 40-41).

In His last hours and most difficult time on earth, looking into a cup of wrath and sin, Jesus asked His most sympathetic disciples to watch with Him. Peter, as they all, had vowed to go with Him even into death, but they were unable to pray with Him in His final and most difficult moments due to their own weariness. If they could not keep watch with Him in His hour of agony, they would not be able to give Him support during His imminent trial and execution.

Three times Jesus asked the disciples to keep watch with Him, but they were unable to do so, therefore Jesus would have to go through the trial alone. He understands when you are alone, struggling through a trial of faith. He experienced aloneness also! He understands when no one else understands. You can trust Him in your darkest hour even if you are weary. “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’”(Hebrews 13:5).

The Lord has promised to never leave you nor forsake you. He keeps watch over you as the Psalmist says, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore” (Psalm 121:1-8). Trust in Him, for He watches over you!
