God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us (1 John 1:5a-10).
In Christ, we have a new beginning! We can begin again! What God our Father has done for us staggers the imagination and astounds the senses. The forgiveness of sins which God offers us is an other world concept. Obviously, it was conceived in His heart, hidden and protected from the machinations of man. This divine offer is pure, unmolested, and irrevocable.
John defines God as light which contrasts Him from humans who are darkness, but through repentance, we have fellowship with Him who is light, and we do not walk in darkness! His forgiveness removes us from the burial cloth of sin and darkness and brings us into His own fellowship, thus making us like Himself. He changes our lives and lifestyles from darkness to light. Walking in this light brings us into fellowship, not only with Himself but also with each other. Unconfessed sin hinders fellowship with God and each other, but when we confess our sin, the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin, all unrighteousness. Therefore, when we come to the Father in repentance, He forgives us based on the work of His Son, and by so doing, He shares Christ’s blood with us! True fellowship is more than sharing His sweet presence; it is sharing in His own precious blood.
