Mother’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. It is probably because I grew up with a profound love and respect for my own Mother. She would often quote to me these words from the Scriptures, “honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Deuteronomy 5:16). I always earnestly tried to do that.
Many times during the last 30 plus years, I have been asked to stay in an area in order to continue praying and preaching the Word of God, but I have always said, “No, I’ve got to get home by Mother’s Day; I can’t be out of my pulpit on that very important day.”
Being a mother is one of the greatest assignments God has ever given a saint. A mother is one who gives birth; therefore, she is the source or origin of something great. God has placed in the midst of His Church a constant reminder that we must all give spiritual birth to what He has commanded us. If we are to become what the Lord intends, we must learn how to give birth. Isaiah says, “for as soon as Zion was in labor, she gave birth to her children’’ (Isaiah 66:8). Motherhood and the birthing process are God’s method of producing and increase. Every mother is a reminder of the greatness Jesus has placed within her and us.
My own mother was a Proverbs 31 woman and mother. The Lord gave me more than a half century of her example. She showed me that when God impregnates you with an idea or a vision, it is that you might bring it forth, just as Zion did. Bringing forth is often painful, but doable! The Scripture says, “a woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world” (John 16:21). Could it be that we have not seen what the Lord wants for us because we are afraid of the birthing process? I encourage you today to persevere in the process, for joy will flood you when you bring forth fruit according to God’s plan for your life! The Lord has placed before us fruitful women of God as examples. Let us take this to heart and produce as Jesus desires.
